Not so Despicable: films gave double lift

Two of the biggest-grossing kids’ films of all time have helped International Greetings boost its sales as pester power won the day.

Frozen and Despicable Me wrapping paper, cards and stationery flew off the shelves sending sales up 2% to £229 million, with pre-tax profits soaring 41% to £7.3 million.

Bosses said: “We will continue to grow sales of licensed products… Sales of the highly popular Frozen and Despicable Me ranges were noteworthy and continue to thrive into the new year.” The company, which supplies supermarkets and High Street retailers, was also helped by the successful opening of a new processing plant and improving facilities in China.

It led to a three-year contract to exclusively supply greeting cards to Poundland and chief executive Paul Fineman said the investment means the company is on track to deliver double-digit growth.

The company found particular success in Europe, where underlying profits jumped 32%, helped by the integration of a Dutch giftware business. The shares rose 4.5% to 127p.
