Dunelm, the retailer of soft furnishings, has again showed why it is one of the High Street’s most reliable performers by posting another uplift in half-year sales and profits.

The furniture chain said it had grown market share and added a further 10 stores over the past six months, taking its total to 123.

Dunelm, which began as a market stall in Leicester in 1979, grew sales at stores open at least a year by 2.2% over the six months to December 29.

The group said it expects its half-year profits to be up by as much as 15% to £60 million over the half-year.

But its chief executive Nick Wharton anticipates that Dunelm will find like-for-like sales growth “much harder to achieve” for the rest of its financial year, as it comes up against strong figures.

Shares in Dunelm fell by 20p, or 3%, to 691p today but they have increased by more than a third since July.
