Digital powers ahead after Future moves away from print

27 September 2012

Magazine publisher Future’s shares jumped 12% today on the strength of booming sales on the iPad, as it said digital editions on Apple devices brought in £5 million in less than a year.

Titles such as the gadget magazine T3 have proved popular on Apple’s Newsstand service.

More than 45 million visitors a month are logging on to Future’s websites, up 50% on a year ago, and the group was named Digital Publisher of the Year at last night’s PPA magazine awards.

Chief executive Mark Wood said Future was making “progress towards a predominantly digital business”, although digital still represented only about one fifth of turnover.

The shares, up 1.25p at 11.5p, remain more than 50% below the levels of 18 months ago, as print revenues have come under pressure.

Future said it was “close to returning to profitability” in America.
