Diageo ups stake in Vietnamese spirits producer

15 June 2012

Alcoholic drinks giant Diageo continued its deal spree today, increasing its stake in Halico, Vietnam’s biggest spirits maker.

It now owns 45.5% of the company behind Hanoi Vodka, after buying another 10.6% for £14 million. Diageo will continue to assist the business with branding, supply and distribution.

Halico was founded in 1898 and is still controlled by the state-owned Hanoi Beverage Company.

Diageo has recently completed deals in China, Turkey, Ethiopia and Brazil to help meet its target of having 50% of group sales coming from emerging markets by 2015. It is working on buying a stake in Mexican tequila brand José Cuervo.
