French luxury brand Chanel has chosen London for a perfume and cosmetics-only store.

It has agreed a deal to open the “fragrance and beauty concept” store in Covent Garden in time for the Olympics.

The 1,437 square foot store in the Market Building is part of landlord Capital & Counties plan to bring in more high-end brands to the area.

The two floor shop at Covent Garden, to open later this month, will also include “make over stations” and a manicure salon. The store is a “pop-up” planned to open for six months but if it is successful it may stay for longer.

The fragrance and beauty sector is a huge part of the luxury goods industry. The UK fragrance market is valued at around £1.5 billion. Despite consumer cutbacks shoppers are still willing to spend on cosmetics. Harvey Nichols, keen to cash in on this trend, has begun a new chain of beauty stores called Beauty Bazaar.

At Covent Garden, Beverley Churchill, brand director at Covent Garden London said: “To be able to work with Chanel is a coup for the estate and a further proof point of how the area has changed.”
