London's Brunel University is launching a new Tech City masters degree in an attempt to bridge the skills gap in the capital’s technology industry.

The new digital services design course, which is being offered by Brunel’s computer science department, will teach students how to design apps and websites — a field known as “user experience” or UX.

The year-long course has been designed with digital design studio Wilson Fletcher and features input from a number of firms based in East London’s so-called Tech City, including digital agencies UsTwo, Sapient Nitro and ORM. Brunel’s course director Steve Love said: “Companies working in this area felt there was a skills gap. The idea is for students to have a strong theoretical background combined with practical skills and tools.

“In term one and term two, students will have the chance to work in a company for three weeks and they can do their dissertation in the company. The businesses we’ve spoken to have been very positive.”
