The boss of pubs company Young & Co raised a glass to Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and better weather today after a rise in sales.

Chief executive Steve Goodyear said: “Wimbledon was good — we have six pubs in the area and they all traded very well. A British winner is very good to keep the feelgood factor going. Trading was much better than last year as Murray and the weather enticed people out.”

Young’s, which saw like-for-like sales up 6.8% in the first three months of its financial year, also benefited from its riverside pubs as the sun finally made an appearance. “London has been looking buoyant. We’ve got 15 pubs down by the river and it has been pretty encouraging for us,” Goodyear said.

Young’s has 240 pubs after snapping up boozers in Clapham, Ealing and Bethnal Green in the past fortnight.
