BT must let internet rivals use lines for superfast broadband

11 April 2012

BT will have to give rival internet service providers access to its fibre lines under Ofcom plans to promote superfast broadband.

The telecoms regulator today said it would propose allowing competitors to have access to BT's fibre lines, underground ducts and telegraph poles at a price set by the firm to enable a fair rate of return.

Ofcom believes the telecoms giant has available capacity to give rivals a share. The proposals are designed to increase competition within the superfast broadband market, which requires a fibre network.

"Superfast broadband is starting to be a reality in the UK, with very significant advances in recent months in the speeds some providers are offering," said Ofcom's chief executive, Ed Richards.

"Ofcom's proposed regulatory framework is intended to support the next phase of development by promoting investment, competition and innovation for consumers across the UK."
