Hundreds of film-lovers were transported across the globe to exotic destinations through the magic of the movies at the British Airways Silent Picturehouse last week, which screened five travel-inspired films simultaneously on five screens over five days. The event proved so popular, an extra day was added to accommodate demand.

All the viewer had to do is choose which one to see – Skyfall, Jaws, Top Gun, The Beach or, the people’s choice selected via a Facebook poll, Slumdog Millionaire.

Lounging on leather sofas and lying on lazyboys in the enchanting arches of Vinopolis which were transformed into a silent auditorium, viewers listened on personal Sennheiser headphones as though they were enjoying an in-flight entertainment experience.

Included in the ticket – which proved to be one of the hottest events of the summer – were mouth-watering in-movie refreshments inspired by each of the films.

In addition to specially created flavoured popcorns, which included Shaken Not Stirred Martini flavour, Michelin-star chef Simon Hulstone also produced some delicious hot dogs – Shark Bite Caesar and the Taco Dog – to compliment the movies.

Old-fashioned pick ‘n’ mix sweets, yummy Ice Cream Union tubs, a glass of Taittinger champagne and some delicious Hotel Chocolat treats gave the whole event an indulgent and luxurious feel, helped by the British Airways Ambassadors who ensured the experience was first class.

With cocktails themed on each film, including Sex on ‘The Beach’ and Amity Island Iced Tea, this unique event, in partnership with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), enabled the audience to immerse themselves in the joys of cinema and get carried away to the heat of India, Martha’s vineyard or the moors of Scotland – wherever their film took them.

Families could enjoy daytime Disney/Pixar matinee screenings of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Cars 2, Up, Oz the Great and Powerful and The Muppets. They too enjoyed tubs of ice cream, unlimited pic ‘n’ mix and specially created Space Dust popcorn and Glow in the Dark hot dogs.

Once again, all they had to do was choose which film to watch. Have your say on what to watch and check out the latest entertainment on offer on BA flights – go to facebook.com/britishairways to vote.
